Regional Training Programs (RTPs)

Customized training programs delivered in your region

Regional Training Programs (RTPs) make it easy to deliver group learning opportunities at the local level. BHMT funds RTPs to provide customized focused training programs around a specific topic or area of study at no-cost to your department.

What types of training do RTPs provide?

You can work with your Regional Workforce Planning and Development (RWFPD) team to customize a Regional Training Program for your team in the following areas:

  • Career preparation services
  • Course prerequisites
  • Basic skills
  • Specialty certifications
  • Computer/technology training
  • Nurse education/skill enhancement
  • Professional/technical education

RTPs also provide support for redeployment assistance programs that enhance and support the Employment & Income Security Agreement.

Things to consider before talking to WFPD

To get started, ask yourself these 3 key questions, so you can make the RTP process a little easier.

      1. Why do I want to create this training program? Why is it needed?
      2. What is the impact on patient care and/or KP if this program is not funded?
      3. Is this type of training program a KP responsibility?

Need a little inspiration?

The RTP Directory was created so you can learn about the different types of training programs BHMT has funded, and to see if there is an existing (or previous) program that’s a good fit for your team’s needs.

Program criteria – programs should meet these goals:

  • Help employees grow in their careers
  • Lead to a license, degree, or certificate
  • Fill critical job needs
  • Reduce extra staffing costs (like overtime or outside hires)
  • Fit within BHMT’s funding ability

NOTE: BHMT does not pay for:

  • Backfill, benefits or overtime
  • Salary costs like program management or instructors
  • Travel, meals or lodging

The regional training program should use available funds (i.e. TR, education leave, grant funding) before utilizing BHMT funds.

Programs shall have regional management and local union support and, when possible, leverage best practices across regions.

To take part in an approved RTP, BHMT-eligible KP employees must:

  • Be a KP Union Alliance or Coalition employee
  • Be a BHMT-eligible employee
  • Have completed your probationary period

Some programs may have additional eligibility rules —like required training, licenses or job experience.

Guidelines for additional participant eligibility criteria that will allow for the establishment of a participant selection process:

  • Eligibility criteria for RTPs should be specific to each program’s intended outcome.
  • Criteria should detail all prerequisite training and/or licensure necessary for participants to have at time of application for participants to practice in the workplace upon completion of the training program.
  • Criteria/selection process should be detailed and thorough enough to provide applicants a realistic expectation of what skills and/or experience is necessary for successful completion of the training program.
  • If the training program will lead to a new job within KP, the eligibility criteria/selection process should be detailed and thorough enough to provide applicants with realistic expectations of job conditions, locations, and responsibilities they will face in the new position prior to applying for the training program.

The complete eligibility criteria and selection process for each RTP will need to be detailed within the RTP application. Once the BHMT Trustees approve the program for funding, no deviation from the written criteria and selection process can be made without first having an amendment to the application approved by the BHMT Trustees.
